When starting my computer a message comes up saying DEP has closed a programme to protect my computer. The programme is a cookie converter! My desktop icons have gone and I can only access interent by creating a new task. I have windows xp and do not know what to do. I have no start button so can not get into control panel. What do I do???

Press controll alt delete, and task manager will open. then select new task, and run “explorer.exe” you’ll have to type it in and select “ok”
the new task button is in the “Applications” tab
explorer.exe is basically the process that runs your start bar, start button, and desktop icons, it has obviously been ended, but starting it is easy if you follow my steps above.
alot of people are telling you to press the windows button.
that wont work, the process needs to be started again first.

You should have a button on your keyboard that has the windows symbol (its on the bottom row on mine, beside alt)
press this and it will open up your start menu and you can access your control panel from here..
Hope it helps

hey buddy,ok easy solution for ya, ctrl, alt and delete to open task manager, select “new task”, where it says “open” in the box next to it type in “explorer.exe” and i think that should bring back your desk top.
blessed be.

try pressing Ctrl+Alt+delete. then press (start task manager on vista) and the file in top right and run
in the box type “explore.exe” that might work. or restart

There should be a windows icon on your keyboard, usually beside the alt key.

I hate telling people this but sometimes it’s a good idea to reformat your drive and reinstall everything. That’s a painful process for most people. Me, I just pop in a ghost disk and reload from a ghost on another drive. Takes about 15min. I don’t know if you have tried disabling your startup programs and see what happens but I would try that first.
