Having access to buildings and public areas is vitally important for people with disabilities. Not being able to use the bathroom or enter a particular building can be one of the most frustrating aspects of being disabled. It is often very simple to make somewhere accessible for a disabled person and making the small steps toward making it possible is extremely important. Legislation is in place that makes providing disabled access in all public buildings and workplaces essential and increasingly the new build properties are built with disabled access.

It is very rare that a house comes prepared for disabled use. Most housing does not come with disabled access as standard so most people that are disabled have to go about making improvements to their homes on their own. As a result much of the work that is done to the home is bespoke and specific to the needs of the individual concerned. There are some initiatives in place that are designed to encourage developers to include basic disabled access features in new buildings. Things like zero-step entries and wide doors for wheelchair access make houses accessible for the majority of people and as a result more people can travel freely into people’s homes.

Great Britain is one of the best countries in the world for providing disabled access in the home. This is partly to do with legislation that has been passed by parliament. In 1999 a law was passed that detailed seven requirements for multifamily buildings which have more than four units. These seven requirements are:

1) There must be an accessible building entrance on an accessible route

2) The common and public use areas must be accessible to all

3) Wheelchair users must be able to use the doors

4) There must be a complete access route into and through the dwelling

5) Controls must be accessible. This includes thermostats, light switches, electrical outlets and environmental controls

6) Walls in the bathrooms must be reinforced so that they can cater for grab bars to be installed at a later date

7) The bathrooms and kitchens must be useable

The UK has a fairly advanced attitude to creating housing that is accessible for people with disabilities. Sadly the United States has not got such a stringent attitude to the problem. This is because the houses that Americans typically live in are not covered by the law. Most Americans live in single family homes that are not covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act or the Fair Housing Act. The only houses covered and required to provide access are the government built housing areas which only accounts for a very small percentage of the total number of houses in the United States of America. This means that even new houses do not cater for disabled people and have very real accessibility issues. This means that even new houses face the problems that occur in old houses. It seems like this is in some way not making the most of the opportunity to make things accessible as standard.

Children and adults alike are spellbound by the world of the Internet. Unfortunately, there are times when children can become exposed to material and information that is not appropriate for their age or experience. In addition, youngsters can unknowingly disclose sensitive personal information to an unscrupulous “lurker,” revealing credit card numbers or other data without being aware. Because of these potential risks, PC computer security is vital, and software for parental control is a necessary component for an all-ages household.

The first line of part of your job is to teach your child how to use the Internet safely. Children are fascinated with computers and the Internet as early as age 2, and young children can be easily guided to appropriate web sites that provide entertainment and education.

As children get older, however, it becomes more difficult to know about all their online activities. By adolescence, they may engage in looking at pornography or chatting online with potential predators. Sometimes they’ll post photos of themselves and provide information that could allow pedophiles to try to meet them offline.

Being involved with your child’s online activities helps reduce some of these risks. Keeping the computer in the where you can see it or just being interested in what they view may be enough to help children resist the lure of ‘forbidden’ sites.

It’s usually not possible, though, to supervise 100 percent of your child’s total online activities. Frightening thought, but when you’re at work or shopping you can’t know what your child is being exposed to.

Or can you?

In fact, there are a wide range of PC computer security software and hardware tools that can limit your child’s Internet access or monitor his or her computer activities. Most cost very little, some are even free, others are simply pointers for how to restrict access.

HOW FILTERING SOFTWARE WORKS

Filtering software works by blocking certain web sites or specific keywords. Parents can specify them or use a pre-built list. For example, a list of pornographic or otherwise inappropriate sites is given by the software vendor and can be updated from their web site. Any time your child tries to access one of these web sites he or she will get a ‘HTTP 404 Page Not Found’ or similar message.

Filters can also be set up to prevent access to certain types of Internet traffic such as instant messaging, newsgroups, e-mail, or peer-to-peer (P2P) hosting. The latter is often used for file exchanges.

These filters aren’t perfect and it’s next to impossible for a database to be totally up-to-date because new web sites come onto the Internet all the time, but they help.

Another type of software for parental control records all your child’s computer activity – sites visited, e-mails sent or received, programs run, even individual keystrokes in some cases.

Another option is to install software which only allows computer use to certain times during the day. The computer shuts off at scheduled times or when a certain amount of data has been downloaded from the Internet. Actually Windows has built-in facilities for doing this, but configuring it requires a level of expertise beyond the average user. You can search for parental control software ratings, as features vary from one manufacturer to another.

Software for parental control exists which can block your child’s name, address or other personal details as specified by the parent from being sent. Be sure to do a parental control software comparison to determine which type of software is right for your family.

UPS AND DOWNS OF BROWSER PROTECTION

Some browsers are specifically created for children that incorporate many of the PC computer security filters discussed above. They’re easier for children to use than Internet Explorer or Firefox but don’t rely totally on this type of browser, however. Internet Explorer can’t be uninstalled from the Windows operating system and any net savvy kid will probably know how to gain access to it.

Magnetic locks use electromagnetism to control the entire locking mechanism. Much like your TV, refrigerator or any other appliance, these locks rely on electric power. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. But regardless, they tend to be fairly reliable and can keep your most valuable items safe.

Because they rely on electric power, they do run the risk of falling due to a power failure. But typically you can get your power up and running fairly quickly in the case of an emergency. Regardless of this, there is no key needed with your magnetic locks. You will never be locked out again because you lost your key and even better, the locks are impossible to pick.

The key component to a magnetic lock control system is the electromagnet that is made out of advanced metal alloys. As the electric power activates it, the bolt will slide up and down or in and out to lock the door. You will find that some have timing mechanisms, which allow you to set a specific time that you want this function to work.

Magnetic locks work only with a DC current of 12 to 24 volts. Most systems do use batteries to get its power, but some of the high-tech models are wired into the AC current and converted into DC by an internal transformer. This is crucial because if the power fails, any system running on batteries will fail as well. However, locks using AC power will remain locked when the power goes out.

Magnetic locks can pick up a number of different coding mechanisms. Some that you may encounter include smart cards, proximity readers and keypads. This kind of versatility makes them convenient for both home and business use. If you lose your card or forget the number for the keypad, you can quickly deactivate them for the safety of your home. Then, only the new code will be given to those authorized.

The last thing to keep in mind is that you are dealing with security and your safety. Because of this, it is recommended that you have your magnetic locks installed by a professional. The last thing you want is for your locks to break down on you allowing intruders an open house. Make sure it is installed properly and hire a professional to get it right.

Magnetic locks have a number of advantages over other styles of locks. It is impossible to pick because it runs on electricity, it is versatile and reliable, and it has a number of different coding mechanisms. Having a magnetic lock can keep you, your valuables, and

Lock bumping is a method of forced entry that employs a tool called a bump key. Lock bumping is similar to lock picking; however, it is usually faster and requires far less expertise to be successful. Because bump keys are inexpensive and can be easily purchased online, this frightening phenomenon is gaining in popularity as a method by which thieves can enter homes and businesses.

History of Lock Bumping

The technique of lock bumping is not new. According to ALOA (the Associated Locksmiths of America), locksmiths have been bumping locks for about 75 years as a way to bypass damaged key cylinders. In more recent years, however, common thieves have begun to take up the practice, thanks to the wide availability of bump keys for sale online and many internet resources that provide detailed depictions of the practice. Lock bumping was first recognized as a security threat in 2002, when a German man brought it to the attention of the media. Since then, many news media and publications in the United States and around the world have reported on the issue.

How does it work?

A bump key is simply a key that has been filed down in a certain way. When the bump key is inserted into the lock and tapped lightly with an object such as a hammer or screwdriver, the lock will open. There are many videos on the internet depicting the process of lock bumping, and it is frighteningly easy to do. One local U.S. new station even showed a young child that was successful at bumping a lock after only a few attempts.

How to Protect Yourself

Because bump keys can be used to open all door locks of a certain profile, and there aren’t that many different types of keyway profiles out there, most people are at risk of lock bumping. There are a number of door locks on the market today that are advertised as “bump proof.” For the most part, these locks may be slightly more secure, but in many cases they only make bumping more difficult, but not impossible.

It is important to note that as of yet, there has been no standard established for what truly constitutes a “bump proof” lock. For the best security, consumers should look for door locks that have no keyway on the exterior of the door. After all, you can’t use a bump key when there’s no place to insert it!
